The RAINS are here again!

By Tasha Grundy

This is the new team!

Firstly, I would just like to say how happy we all are to have arrived in Ghana. After a busy couple of months fundraising and getting ourselves organised it was a relief to arrive at Heathrow Airport and start catching up with the rest of the UK volunteers.

UK volunteers in Accra
Our journey ended up being very, very long. It ended up taking us around four days to arrive In Tamale with a short stop off in Ivory Coast along the way. Harmattan (the dry dusty season) makes travelling very difficult.

So when we finally arrived we had a wonderful week training together and meeting all the in-country volunteers. It was very exciting even though we were all extremely tired. We spent the week bonding with each other and getting to know and experience Ghana a little bit more.

Ghana is such a beautiful country. Different in nearly every way to the UK but I can honestly say it’s a very good different! We made our first trip to the market two days after arriving, armed with some of the in-country volunteers to help us master our bargaining skills. Attempting to speak Dagbani (Tamale’s local language) and trying to barter with the locals is something I’m sure most of the UK volunteers will agree was a surreal experience.

Within a short period of time we had moved into our team houses and started settling in. Getting used to a house with chickens strolling around our garden is going to take some getting used to! We have also begun to settle in to our office and getting to know our amazing Team Leaders. We are currently planning what we will be doing for the next couple of months. Next week I’m sure will be filled with information about the wonderful work we are doing!
